Delta-8 THC vs Delta-9 THC

Posted on May 27th, 2023 to Cannabis Science

Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC, both naturally found in cannabis, have become central to discussions around the use of cannabis for therapeutic and recreational purposes. While they bear similarities, these two compounds also exhibit differences in terms of chemical structure, psychoactive potency, effects, popularity, production, and legality.

Chemical Structure: Delta-8 THC and Delta-9 THC share the same molecular formula, C21H30O2, signifying the presence of 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms. However, a small yet crucial difference lies in the placement of a carbon-carbon double bond. In Delta-9 THC, the double bond is on the ninth carbon in the chain, while in Delta-8 THC, the double bond is on the eighth. This slight alteration significantly affects the way these compounds interact with the endocannabinoid system within the human body, leading to different psychoactive effects.

Psychoactive Potency: Delta-9 THC is renowned for its psychoactive potency. As the primary intoxicating compound in cannabis, Delta-9 THC binds directly to the CB1 receptors in the brain, inducing a strong sense of euphoria or a “high.” In contrast, Delta-8 THC has a somewhat weaker affinity for the CB1 receptor due to its differing molecular structure. This results in a less intense psychoactive effect. Some sources suggest that the psychoactive potency of Delta-8 THC is roughly half to two-thirds that of Delta-9 THC. Consequently, Delta-8 THC has gained favor among those seeking a less intense psychoactive experience.

Effects: Both Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC are associated with a range of effects, including euphoria, increased appetite, altered perception, and relaxation. However, the extent and quality of these effects can vary between the two compounds due to their differing psychoactive potencies. Delta-9 THC’s strong psychoactive effects can lead to intense experiences and, at higher doses, might cause feelings of anxiety or paranoia. On the other hand, Delta-8 THC is often described as offering a clearer, more lucid high with a lower likelihood of inducing anxiety or paranoia, making it more suitable for those seeking a gentle psychoactive experience.

Popularity: For many years, Delta-9 THC dominated the cannabis scene due to its plentiful presence in the cannabis plant and its potent psychoactive effects. However, Delta-8 THC has witnessed a surge in popularity in recent times. This rise can be attributed to its milder psychoactive properties and its somewhat less stringent legal status in certain jurisdictions. Many individuals find Delta-8 THC’s milder high more appealing and appreciate its lower likelihood of inducing anxiety or paranoia often associated with Delta-9 THC.

Production: Delta-9 THC naturally occurs in abundance in cannabis, particularly in marijuana strains. On the other hand, Delta-8 THC is found in very low quantities in the cannabis plant. To produce Delta-8 THC in larger volumes, manufacturers often employ a process that involves the conversion of CBD, another cannabinoid abundant in hemp, into Delta-8 THC. This additional conversion process contributes to a higher production cost for Delta-8 THC compared to Delta-9 TH

Legality:  Federally, Delta-9 THC is classified as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act, making it illegal. However, individual states have the power to establish their own marijuana laws. As a result, many states have legalized medical and/or recreational use of marijuana, which includes Delta-9 THC. The legality of Delta-8 THC is more complex. The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp and all hemp-derived products, including cannabinoids, as long as they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. However, the bill doesn’t specifically mention Delta-8 THC. Given that Delta-8 THC can be derived from hemp CBD, some have interpreted this to mean that Delta-8 THC is federally legal. On the state level, Delta-8 THC’s legality varies. Some states have explicitly legalized it, others have explicitly banned it, and others are silent or unclear on the issue. It’s also important to note that the legal landscape is constantly evolving. Please check the most recent laws in your specific area for up-to-date information.
